Reflections on Identifying Oneself as “Fierce”
Suddenly all of these people want to be “Fierce.” My experience has been that powerful and fierce people do not need to announce to others that they are powerful and fierce. Divine Warrior Gods/Goddesses (if there truly are such things—not at all sure about that) do not need to announce to the world that they are such, either. When they tell me they are, I assume they are not, but wish they were, and hope to be, someday.
I really do know some fierce people, and damn, you know it when you are in their presence. They don’t tell you about it. They don’t need to. There aren’t as many Fierce Ones out there as claim to be, that’s for sure.
……………Shamans do not call themselves shamans. True gurus do not carry business cards that list their job title as “Guru.”
Funny jokes do not have to be explained.
Niagara Falls and the Taj Mahal do not have signs nearby telling you “This is a Fierce and Awesome Place!!!!”
Things and people demonstrate to the world who and how they are by just being there. You can call yourself anything, and if that is not who you are, or if that is not truly the energy you emanate, it really doesn’t matter. I could call myself a grizzly bear, but that does not make me one.
Be What You Are/Whistling in the Dark
Be what you are. We will see what you are in your presence, in your presentation, in your visage, in how you treat others. You can’t join with a movement, or hide behind one, and gain personal fierceness from that identification. That is not how fierceness or true power work. It just doesn’t.
Whistling down a dark alley at night might make you feel more confident, but it doesn’t fool anybody else.
Announcing to the world that you are fierce, or a divine warrior feels to me like a social media version of whistling in the dark. Sorry, not buying it.
Who we are is enough. Wearing tee shirts that suggest we are something else won’t over-ride how we actually show up in the world…
By the way, whatever happened to people striving to be compassionate and kind? And authentic? I hope that is still a thing…
Recently watching Season 14 of Project Runway. Guess what kind of look almost every designer wants to create for almost every challenge? Yep. Fierce.
